Officer on Leave After Fatally Shooting Nathan Russell, Grocery Store Employee, in Monticello

Title: Police Officer on Leave After Shooting Suspect in Killing of Monticello Grocery Store Employee In Monticello, an unfortunate event unfolded on Thursday evening when an officer shot a suspect linked to the killing of a grocery store employee.

 The Monticello Police Department swiftly responded to a shooting report at Fareway Meat and Grocery, located at 420 North Farley St. around 7:30 p.m. 

 The victim, identified as Aaron McAtee, a 48-year-old Monticello resident, tragically passed away despite efforts to save him at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. 

 As the investigation progressed, Nathan Russell, a 38-year-old individual from East Dubuque, Illinois, emerged as a person of interest. 



A Delaware County deputy located Russell in Hopkinton, but an attempted apprehension resulted in the deputy shooting Russell, who was subsequently taken to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for treatment. 

 The deputy involved has been placed on critical incident leave as multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, collaborate to thoroughly investigate the shooting. 

 The Jones County Attorney’s Office and the Delaware County Attorney’s Office are also examining the incident, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation. Chief Britt D. Smith stressed that there is currently no active threat to the public.
