Off-Duty LAPD Officer Darrell Cunningham and Passenger Killed in High-Speed Crash

Northridge witnessed a harrowing car crash on Saturday morning that claimed the lives of two individuals, including an off-duty Los Angeles police officer, Darrell Cunningham, who had served with the LAPD for nearly five years. The incident was triggered by a speeding vehicle that flagrantly ran a red light at a staggering 100 mph, as confirmed by authorities.

Expressing deep sorrow, LAPD Chief Michel Moore condemned the collision as an act of "senseless violence," squarely attributing the cause to the intoxicated state of the driver at fault. The driver, a 20-year-old, was behind the wheel of a black BMW that collided with Cunningham's vehicle. The crash's impact was so severe that the vehicles were left entangled alongside a damaged fire hydrant and a car wedged against a building.

Tragically, the off-duty officer and his companion in the front seat succumbed to their injuries at the scene despite the prompt efforts of LAFD paramedics. On the other hand, the backseat passenger, an off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, sustained multiple injuries, including a broken hip, but is expected to pull through. Additionally, a female occupant from the BMW managed to extricate herself from the wreck but suffered severe harm.

The 20-year-old driver of the BMW remains in critical condition, unconscious, and under arrest on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. While the investigation continues, authorities are considering additional charges against the driver as more evidence is gathered.

Cunningham's untimely demise has left his fiancée and two young sons bereft. Chief Moore has pledged unwavering support to the family during this trying period. The catastrophic episode serves as a stark reminder of the perils of driving under the influence and the criticality of adhering to traffic regulations to avert such devastating catastrophes.
