Todd Sulsberger and Walter Sulsberger Death ; Father and Son Dead after Hornick, Iowa Farm Shooting.

Father and Son Found Dead in Iowa Farm Shootout

Northwest Iowa was rocked by a tragic incident as a father and son were found dead following a series of harrowing events at a farm near Hornick. Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan revealed that the distress call was made by 72-year-old Todd Sulzberger at approximately 7:30 on Sunday evening, initiating a chain of events that ultimately led to a fatal confrontation.

According to Sheriff Sheehan, the initial call to the Woodbury County Communications Center was from a male victim reporting that his own son, identified as 44-year-old Walter Sulzberger, was allegedly firing shots at him. Deputies swiftly responded to the distress call, locating the suspect, Walter Sulsberger, seated in a pick-up on his father's property. However, attempts to resolve the situation peacefully were quickly met with resistance.

In response to the gravity of the situation, law enforcement agencies took decisive action, dispatching three armored vehicles to the scene. At the same time, the Iowa State Patrol provided crucial air surveillance support. A crisis negotiator was also engaged in dialogue with Walter Sulsberger for several hours, attempting to facilitate a peaceful surrender. However, these efforts were tragically cut short.

Sheriff Sheehan recounted that at approximately 2:45 a.m., while negotiations were still underway, the suspect initiated gunfire, targeting the tactical teams moving in to apprehend him. In a desperate bid to protect themselves, law enforcement personnel were left with no choice but to return fire, resulting in the fatal shooting of Walter Sulzberger.

The grim discovery of Todd Sulsberger's lifeless body on the property further deepened the tragedy. It has been confirmed that before Todd's distress call, dispatchers had received reports of livestock running amok and a fire on the premises. Sheriff Sheehan was perplexed, stating, "There were cattle out. How those cattle were made to be free, I don't know. I'm sure the investigation will determine that."

Amidst the chaos, two of the armored vehicles sustained gunfire damage, though thankfully, no law enforcement officers or first responders were injured in the exchange. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been called in to conduct a comprehensive probe into the distressing events, aiming to shed light on the sequence of occurrences leading to this devastating loss of life.
